[611] – Battered women’s legal advocacy project

Maria Gloria Fressia was born in Uruguay, where she received a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of the Republic in 1978. As a lawyer in Uruguay, Fressia advocated decisively for women’s rights. She taught Procedural Law at the School of Law of the Republican University for fifteen years, and published several law related articles. Fressia participated in projects aimed to transform the civil procedure in Uruguay from mainly written to mainly oral, providing extensive training to judges and lawyers once the new statutes were approved. Since moving to Minnesota in 2001, Maria has been working with the Battered Women’s Legal Advocacy Project (BWLAP) where she developed the Immigration Initiative Path to Freedom, and is currently the Managing Partners at BWLAP.
